MASt Field Trip and Seminars
Your year as a masters student will be enriched by research seminars and a field trip.
Field Trip
During the Easter holidays, the field trip goes to the Betic mountain range in southern Spain (Almeria), a region with exceptionally varied geology in an active plate-boundary setting. There is something spectacular for all tastes: metamorphic basements, overlying reefs, evaporites and turbidite basins, volcanic centres, and major fault zones. The area provides excellent geological revision in a memorable environment. Expert faculty teach in the field and give talks in the evenings. Have a look at this blog post about the 2025 trip.

Logistics
- You will arrange your own travel to a meeting point in Spain. Potential flights will be suggested.
- A visa if needed, you are responsible for organising this on time. Travel insurance will be provided through the university.
- Field Gear, including notebooks, boots, waterproofs, sun-screen, sun-hat, hard hat, hand lens, compass-clino.
Seminars
The department has several weekly seminars series, where visiting scientists present their work. As a MASt student you will be encouraged to attend these and engage with the content of your favourite seminars through additional reading. In the evenings of the field trip and during the final term, a seminar series by scientists across the department is organised.
Twice during the year, students will pick seminars to write critical scientific piece about (each piece counts for 3% of your final grade).
